THE COUNSELING PROCESS
Counseling can assist you in tapping into your own unique strengths and natural resiliency to help reduce feelings of emotional distress, increase satisfaction in interpersonal relationships, promote greater personal awareness and insight, and increase skills for managing stress and problem-solving.
Unhelpful patterns of thinking, emotional responding, and behaving can develop unconsciously over time and prevent a person from living their preferred life. These patterns are targets for change that can be identified and explored more fully when a person feels safe from judgment, indifference, or betrayal of confidence.
Typically, therapy has three phases. The first is about information gathering, where the therapist may ask many questions in an effort to get to know the client and assess the presenting issues. The second phase is the working phase of the treatment and this is when the therapist and client collaborate to make positive changes in the client’s thinking, self-care, emotional regulation, communication, support network, etc. The third phase is the ending of the therapeutic process and this occurs when the client is feeling much better and the client and therapist process the discontinuation of treatment.
"Owning our story can be hard but not nearly as difficult as spending our lives running from it. Embracing our vulnerabilities is risky but not nearly as dangerous as giving up on love and belonging and joy -the experiences that make us the most vulnerable. Only when we are brave enough to explore the darkness will we discover the infinite power of our light…" - Dr. Brene Brown
